About Groupama Stadium Lyon
Groupama Stadium Lyon History
The genesis of Groupama Stadium traces back to a strategic decision by Olympique Lyonnais to replace the venerable Stade de Gerland, whose capacity and facilities had become increasingly inadequate for the club's burgeoning ambitions. Construction commenced in 2013 under the visionary guidance of the Populous Architects firm, which has quite the reputation for delivering iconic sports complexes to the worldwide community. The stadium officially opened its doors in January 2016 and has since been the beating heart of Olympique Lyonnais' ambitions, capable of staging ensemble events as significant as the 2016 UEFA Champions League final.
Groupama Stadium Lyon Facts and Figures
The Groupama Stadium in Lyon, France, is a stunning modern structure built to accommodate the needs of today's sports fan. Thousands of people can be seated comfortably and securely within its sleek, beautiful shell — one of the stadium's best advantages. Its construction took place from 2013 to 2016, and the first grand event staged there was the UEFA Champions League final in 2016. Since then, the venue has been used for many other kinds of spectacles, most notably for those of the just-mentioned Olympique Lyonnais football club — both as those guys perform and as those guys secure the 43 million euros (about $46 million, give or take) promised in the naming rights to the city of Lyon.
Sections for Families: The Groupama Stadium offers a few specially designed sections for fans attending with children. These "family sections" were created to ensure that younger fans and their family members have a comfortable environment to enjoy the game. The placement of Groupama's main speakers at the very front of the sections helps with "balancing acoustics," so music (and cheering) sounds good. The atmosphere, overall, is described as relaxed (which is key when you have a toddler trying to keep it together). The setup also makes for a pretty solid viewing experience. The presence of the acoustic engineer who worked on the project can be felt throughout. His ethos concerning sound and atmosphere is pretty evident in how well everything came out.
Groupama Stadium Lyon holds 59,186 spectators, a number that places it among the largest stadiums in France. The figure remains stable even though other types of events may cause slight fluctuations in how many people can be packed inside while still obeying fire codes and ensuring safety and comfort. When it comes to the standard configuration for a football match, the venue upholds the integrity of that number.
Recent developments at Groupama Stadium underscore the venue's dedication to continuous improvement. A series of upgrades and renovations have taken place since the stadium first opened — most recently, significant changes to the spaces where fans gather before and during events, making for a much more pleasant experience.
The partnership with Groupama has fortified the stadium's financial picture and improved its brand visibility, but what really matters to folks coming to the venue is this: the changes and improvements being made are elevating the stadium's status and positions as a premier European sports and entertainment venue.
