Experience world-class events at Murrayfield!
Murrayfield is not only the largest dedicated rugby stadium in Europe; it has also become the leading venue in Scotland for hosting a variety of large-scale events and public performances. Since this dual identity emerged, beginning with the first concert held at the stadium in 1982, the combination of rugby fame and adaptable acoustics has led to Murrayfield hosting more than 56 public performances over the years, from major acts like UB40 and Rod Stewart to orchestral performances such as Jean Sibelius at the 2005 European Athletics Championships. The first artist to perform at Murrayfield, Billy Joel, returned in 1993, and since then the stadium's reputation as a bucket-list venue for artists has only grown.
With a capacity of 67,144 for public performances, the electric ambience generated by a full house ensures every event becomes memorable. Purists of rugby revel in the intimacy of witnessing scrums and line-outs from a proximity few venues can provide, while music lovers praise Murrayfield's acoustics, which can deliver soundscapes surprisingly close to those heard in dedicated concert halls. This hybrid experience allows a total-immersion visit in which history, art, and sport coalesce in one location. Event-goers frequently rate Murrayfield above comparable venues for its sense of community, cleanliness, historical atmosphere, and the integration of tradition with forward-thinking amenities.

About Murrayfield
Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium is one of the biggest and most impressive rugby venues in the world. It seats 67,144 fans and has hosted both major rugby events and a busy summer concert schedule. The stadium generates an estimated £30 million for the local economy every year, a boost to hospitality, transport, and retail sectors. The venue's mix of sporting and cultural events makes it a unique attraction for both locals and visitors.
Fans watching their budget may opt for seats in the upper corners, which are generally more affordable than premium areas. Side stands running the length of the pitch provide the best views of line-outs and other crucial moments, while end-zone seats are useful for watching attacking plays as they develop.
Murrayfield History
The story of Murrayfield begins in 1899, when the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) acquired a ten-acre site to build a stadium dedicated to the sport. The first match, Scotland versus Wales, introduced the venue to the international rugby scene. A tragic partial structural failure in 1902 prompted the SRU to implement modern crowd safety measures, changes that helped shape the secure environments found in later stadiums.
In 1931 the North Stand was added to the existing South Stand, and the iconic Grandstand was built in 1975. A major restoration and refurbishment in the 1990s resulted in the current 67,144 capacity and prepared the stadium for the modern era of large-scale events. Each architectural restoration has aimed to respect the venue's historic character while preparing it for future needs.
Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium opened in 1899 and, following significant safety-driven rebuilding after 1902, evolved into the large-capacity venue it is today. It attracts roughly 800,000 rugby spectators through its turnstiles each year and supports both national and international fixtures as its primary draw, while also hosting a busy season of concerts.
Murrayfield Facts and Figures
- Capacity: 67,144 seats.
- Annual rugby attendance: approximately 800,000 through the turnstiles per year.
- Economic impact: estimated £30 million generated for the local economy annually.
These figures underline Murrayfield's scale and importance to Edinburgh's sporting and cultural life.
Murrayfield Seating Guide
Understanding Murrayfield's seating configuration helps with choosing tickets that match priorities and budget. The side stands offer the best perspective on line-outs and tactical play, while upper-corner seats provide affordability with elevated views. End-zone seats work well for seeing attacking formations as they develop.
Best seats at Murrayfield
For rugby, the side stands that run the length of the pitch generally provide the clearest views of line-outs and set plays. Upper-corner seats are a common budget choice and often offer surprisingly good sightlines for the overall flow of the game. Corporate boxes and premium seats provide additional comfort and amenities for those who prefer a hospitality experience.
Murrayfield Seating Chart
Acoustics and sightlines vary by location: sides and end zones tend to have better acoustics and allow athletes and spectators to hear on-field communication more clearly, while very high seats sacrifice some of that immediacy. The stadium layout includes clear sectioning and access routes; official seating charts should be consulted at purchase to confirm exact views and access information.
The stadium's parking areas now include charging stations for electric vehicles, reflecting Edinburgh's citywide sustainability push.
How to get to Murrayfield
Edinburgh is easily traversed by public transport, and Murrayfield is well connected. The city's tram line reaches an endpoint approximately a 10-minute ride from the city center (Waverley Station), covering the final section to Murrayfield. Tram service on that stretch operates at roughly 5- to 10-minute intervals. A number of local bus routes converge near the stadium to fill in the remaining distance.
Parking at Murrayfield
Parking facilities serve large events, and availability varies with event size — international matches and popular concerts require earlier arrival or pre-booking. Residential streets nearby provide alternatives for those prepared to walk a little further. The lots include electric vehicle charging stations.
Public Transportation to Murrayfield
Lothian Buses and local routes (including the 11, 12, and 26) run close to the stadium and are useful options for visitors who prefer not to drive. A network of bike paths also offers a safe cycling route to and from Murrayfield.
