The "This Is ALIVE!" tour brings Gorillaz to multiple venues across the UK, Ireland, and Europe throughout 2026. The performances let the audience experience a combination of virtual and physical presence. They are surrounded by enormous projection screens that throw the animated characters — the band's "members" — into their midst with the virtual presence or the physical presence on stage of the artists animating the band's characters.
What to expect at a Gorillaz concert
So what can you expect from a "This Is ALIVE!" show? For starters, it's not your typical concert. Unlike other bands, the places where the band plays offer a multimedia experience for the audience. And it's especially unpredictable. The band has been known to let guest artists lend their presence to the songs on stage — that same presence that the guests seem to inflect into the beats.
Whether it's pure presence alone or their virtual presence speaking through the enormous setups in the enormous places that the band likes to play in, it's an experience that's not just for the fans but also seems to inspire (and maybe even scare) the fan's parents. In 1998, musician Damon Albarn and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett envisioned a virtual band. This was both a satire on pop-superstar formation and a framework for higher ambitions. The concept: four fictional musicians with fake backstories, living in a fake studio (Kong), playing fake music. The reality: something altogether stranger and more wonderful.
Gorillaz's first album (2000) is courageous precisely because it's a trip-hop act with hip-hop pretensions doing a rock act with punk posturing. You'd think it'd be a terrible idea, but actually Gorillaz makes for some thrillingly visual music. The videos shouldn't overshadow the music. "Dare" took over the airwaves while upholding artistic honesty, showing that production experimentation and pop reach aren't mutually exclusive.
