Hong Kong 7s Tournament Information

Rugby sevens competition doesn't get better than the Hong Kong Sevens. The longest-standing tournament, it draws the top squads from 24 countries, all vying for the top prize over the course of three days. The presence of such a large group of nations in one city, at one time, makes for electricity tough to find in any other form of rugby that's played around the world.

A meticulously constructed format and rich history make the Hong Kong 7s one of the most watched sporting events in the world. They draw to them not only the devoted fans who annually make the event a sellout but also the global audience that tunes in to watch rugby's most creative sport played at its top performance level. The exhilarating prospect of seismic upsets and last-minute finishes attracts over 120,000 fans to the 3-day tournament every year.

Hong Kong 7s History

The Hong Kong Sevens, which were first staged in 1976 in the vibrant international financial hub of that city, were a pioneering event. They represented the first-ever international competition in the rugby sevens format, a contest between roughly half-sized teams using a hybrid of rugby union and rugby league rules. In the past third of a century, that event has grown beyond all proportions that its modest beginnings and modest intentions in the late 1970s could have foreseen.

Over the years, this event has not only witnessed the metamorphosis of the sport from a curiosity into a serious Olympic endeavor but also experienced a set of changes of its own. These changes have contributed to making both the sport and the event famous world-over. They have made the passionate crowds in the stands and the high level of play on the field almost hallucinatory in terms of both visual and athletic appeal — nearly unmatched in the world of sports.

The event will maintain its presence and profile in Hong Kong while continuing to grow in terms of stature, scope, and international participation. The change to Kai Tak brings extra space while preserving the tournament's iconic character and status.

Hong Kong 7s Format

The Hong Kong Sevens employ a systematic method to really generate some excitement. We will have the same format in the 2024 edition, with a pool stage to establish a rhythm before we get into really handy knockout rounds.

Every match consists of 10 minutes of play (two halves of 5 minutes each). This abbreviated format is a direct test of fitness, tactics, and execution. The effect of every decision is immediate and obvious, and the terrible nature of bad decisions is, too. So few home run plays are available that the format forces players/coaches to use a combination of gut instincts and a fillip of creativity. The end result is both explosive and implosive, with every team undertaking a fair amount of risk in each 10-minute contest.

Following the pool stage, the tournament progresses to a straight knockout competition as it moves toward the grand prize. Knockout stages carry an aura of importance, generating numerous memorable moments. The top two teams from each pool and the two "wild cards" form the eight teams in the quarter-finals of the Cup competition.

Previous Hong Kong 7s Winners

The list of winners at the Hong Kong Sevens is a showcase of rugby's best. Argentina followed up their "technical tour de force" in the 2025 tournament with a 2024 triumph on the same stage. Suddenly, new titleholders were leading a classic Pacific and Commonwealth tournament, as it were, in a "new golden era."

For women, the New Zealand squad took the 2024 championship, emphasizing the improving skills among female players and the rising international reputation of the women's game. The all-black team's 2024 victory broadened the already substantial legacy this tournament has built up over the years.

Nevertheless, Fiji holds an outstanding record at this event, with their triumphs (particularly in 1997 and 2005) becoming an essential part of its identity. Their succession of champions — both the team and the players individually — suggests that the DNA of the Hong Kong Sevens contains something that is particularly Fijian. Fiji's Sevens teams are, in no small measure, just the Hong Kong Sevens in another form.

Top Teams for this year's Hong Kong 7s

Rugby's elite are once again gathered at the Hong Kong Sevens. New Zealand, Fiji, South Africa, and Australia have come to town with bankable talent and wield tournament month as a parade of their national sporting prowess. The Power Four have proven themselves as consistent forces in the sevens format.

Defending champions Argentina have gained enthusiasm with strategic play and passion, putting them in a formidable position to reclaim the crown. Their play, to this point, has largely been mistake-free, highlighted by a solid game plan centered around their star player. Their rivals from Europe, France, and Ireland are steadily improving and provide further intrigue to the proceedings.

Hong Kong, the host nation, will capitalize on the home crowd's fervor when it takes on the crème de la crème of international rugby sevens. The 16-team event this year is a dizzying mélange of old-school heavy hitters, teams on the rise, and first-time invitees that promises excitement and drama from the kickoff whistle to the final siren.

Experience Hong Kong 7s live!

Going to the Hong Kong Sevens is a completely immersive experience. It's not really about what's happening on the pitch; rather, it's about the interaction of a world-class rugby event with a festival atmosphere. It's a massive party mixing national pride, fantastic get-ups, and the all-around good cheer of more or less everyone in attendance. And at no other event in world rugby is the party as shared or as free-spirited as the one in Hong Kong.

The well-loved fan village is a hub of energy all weekend, with music, sports, and gourmet eats. It becomes a nucleus of sorts, drawing fans together whether the sun is high or the skies darken. And when rugby isn't taking place, we're chilling and chatting to the not insignificant hum of an in-village band or a group that draws a crowd to its spontaneous sing-along.

The Hong Kong Sevens has a dual nature: It is, first and foremost, an elite sports event, one that will probably feature the best non-7s players in the world. When the teams that are capable of winning on this level of competition are put on the spot, they produce almost impossibly beautiful rugby. And inside the sold-out stadium — where the joys meet the fervor of a passionate crowd — the place fairly shakes with laughter and song.
