Argentina vs Spain Pool C Men's Rugby World Cup 2027
Spain vs Canada Pool C Men's Rugby World Cup 2027
After being thrown out of World Cup qualifying for Japan 2019, removed from the 2023 tournament after fielding ineligible players and seeing Romania take their place in France, Spain are returning to the party in style with qualification for the 24-team party down under!
Los Leones booked one of Europe’s four direct places by beating the Netherlands 53-24 and Switzerland 43-13 in Yverdon-les-Bains in February 2025, before adding a scalp by edging Canada 24-23 with a penalty on the final play of the game in July.
Afterwards, Spain were narrowly denied a top-two finish in the Rugby Europe Championship. After losing out to Portugal in the semi-final, Spain bounced back in style to beat Romania 29-23 in a pulsating bronze-medal match in Leganés to finish third.
Pool C – alongside Argentina, Canada & Fiji
All three Pool Matches to be played between the 4th-16th of October 2027
Spain have already announced the fixtures they’ll be playing ahead of the Men’s Rugby World Cup. The tour starts off in July against the USA in Charlotte, before heading back to Europe for three Tests against Uruguay (7 November – Madrid), Chile (14 November – Leganés) and Samoa (21 November – Málaga).
Spain will also take on Wales, who hammered Los Leones 54-0 in Madrid back in 1994, in a confirmed preparation fixture before Australia 2027.
Spain have only been at one previous Rugby World Cup. They booked their ticket to 1999 with a win over Portugal in Edinburgh back in 1998. Unfortunately for Spain, they were pitted against some stiff competition in their group and were undone by Uruguay, South Africa and hosts Scotland in the pool stage.
Spain did at least put in a decent performance, coming within touching distance of causing a major upset against Uruguay in Galashiels, before ultimately finishing the tournament winless.
The good news? It will be a rematch against Uruguay ahead of Australia!
Argentina-born head coach Pablo Bouza has guided Spain since taking charge at the end of 2023. Bouza himself won 37 caps for Los Pumas and featured at the 2003 World Cup in Australia before moving into coaching, spending five years as an assistant with Argentina.
Under Bouza, Spain have made major inroads in the form of a Rugby World Cup place, winning Test matches against higher-ranked opposition and a solid Rugby Europe Championship finish this year.
Spain’s squad features a combination of home-grown talent, Iberians academy graduates and stars plying their trade at French professional clubs, with availability a key factor in recent squads.
Here’s who else could star down under:
World Cup: Quarter-finals in 2023
Last Match: None – it’ll be the Flying Fijians’ first-ever meeting against Spain at a Men’s RWC
Why you should watch: The Flying Fijians’ fearless, offloading brand of rugby will keep supporters on their seats this summer!
World Cup: Third place finish in 2007
Last Match: Argentina were the last big guns to visit Spain, triumphing in Madrid last summer
Why you should watch: It’ll be the first RWC match for both Los Leones and Los Pumas, as well as a reunion for head coach Bouza.
World Cup: Last attended the RWC in 2019
Last Match: Lost out to Spain on the siren by just a point last summer
Why you should watch: Canada will be eager to bounce back after a narrow defeat to Spain in July.
In World Rugby’s tournament preview, Los Leones are given just an outside chance of qualifying from their section. However, Spain will go into the contest brimming with confidence, looking for their first-ever try at a Men’s RWC – they’re the only side never to have scored one!
Spain’s three RWC 2027 matches will all be played in different cities, which makes planning a trip down under an exciting prospect for Los Leones’ faithful supporters! All three pool-stage fixtures will be played within two weeks, from 4-16 October, with games in Newcastle, Melbourne and Townsville.

Spain have qualified for the Men’s Rugby World Cup for the first time since 1999 and will look for their first World Cup try when they kick off their Pool C campaign against Fiji on Monday 4 October in Newcastle.
Several Argentine-born players have played a key role in their Rugby World Cup qualification with hooker Álvaro García of the new generation from Stade Français being one to watch.
Get your Spain Rugby World Cup tickets to watch Los Leones return to the men’s World Cup for the first time since 1999 and hope to score their first ever World Cup try when they face Fiji, Argentina & Canada in Australia 2027!
Los Leones’ Rugby World Cup history has been a frustrating one. After a 54-0 drubbing at the hands of Wales in Madrid in 1994, Los Leones were thrown out of qualifying for the 2019 World Cup, then removed from the 2023 tournament after fielding ineligible players, with Romania taking their place in France.
In 1999 they were unlucky not to get a win with defeats at the hands of Uruguay, South Africa and Scotland all coming in the pool stage in Scotland.
Argentina coach Pablo Bouza took charge in late 2023 and the pipeline between rugby in Spain and Argentina has continued under Bouza who won 37 caps for Los Pumas, featured at the 2003 World Cup in Australia and spent five years as an assistant in their coaching setup.
Martiniano Cian scored on Bouza’s debut back in 2024 and is still the main man to score a try, Jon Zabala is their regular captain and the heart of their scrum while experienced Brive lock Asier Usárraga has been a mainstay of recent squads.
In February 2025 they beat the Netherlands 53-24 and Switzerland 43-13 in Yverdon-les-Bains in the Rugby Europe Championship, enough to claim one of Europe's four direct places for Australia 2027 alongside Portugal, Georgia and Romania. In 2026 they finished third in the Rugby Europe Championship, losing the semi-final to Portugal before beating Romania 29-23 in the bronze-medal match in Leganés.
In July, they travelled to the USA to face the Eagles in Charlotte.
Their form has been superb of late and they will fancy their chances of making history in Australia.
Ranked 17th in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings as of July 2026, Uruguay on 7 November in Madrid, Chile in Leganés on the 14th and Samoa on 21st in Málaga complete a loaded international programme this autumn.
A preparation match against Wales is also confirmed for before the World Cup.
The biggest ever World Cup will be staged with 24 teams and 52 matches played at eight stadiums in seven different cities in Australia. It kicks off in Perth on 1 October with the final taking place back in Sydney at Stadium Australia on 13 November 2027.
Spain are in Pool C along with Fiji, Argentina and Canada with each side enjoying six days rest between matches.
Against Fiji it will be an opportunity to correct one wrong – they are the only team still yet to score a try at a men’s World Cup. The Flying Fijians’ fast, offloading game caught many out last time in 2023 with a quarter-final place.
Argentina were the last big-name team to come to Spain, playing in Madrid in the summer of 2023. Argentina finished third at the 2007 World Cup and Bouza played for Los Pumas at the 2003 World Cup.
Canada last featured at a Rugby World Cup back in 2019 but have improved in recent times, with Spain narrowly edging a meeting in 2025 by a point. A good result in Townsville could take Spain into the knock-outs for the first time as the four best third-placed sides progress.
World Rugby give Spain outside hopes of progressing but that would mean a Round of 16 tie against the winners of Pool A at Brisbane Stadium on 23 October. The top two from Pool C travel to Sydney with ties at Sydney Football Stadium staged on 23 October and 24 October.
Quarter-finals are split between Brisbane and Sydney while both semi-finals plus the final and bronze-medal match will be staged back at Sydney’s iconic Stadium Australia.
