History of the French Open

The French Open is the premier clay court tennis championship. First played in 1891, it's an event where all the world's best players compete on the red clay of Roland Garros. The tournament has been held annually (with few exceptions) since its inception.

There have been some incredible moments in the history of tennis witnessed at the tournament: Rafael Nadal's 14 titles establishing him as the "King of Clay," Björn Borg's dominance in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and countless five-set epics.

Paris will once again host this prestigious Grand Slam event in 2026. The French Open is one of only four Grand Slam tournaments and the only one played on clay courts.

Host City and Venue

The 2026 French Open will be played in Paris, France at Stade Roland Garros.
