About AFAS Stadium
AFAS Stadium History
Opened in 2006, AFAS Stadion has been the long-term home of AZ Alkmaar and has delivered memorable domestic and European nights. The 2021 renovations — updating the roof, introducing improved hospitality suites and enhancing acoustics — modernized the venue while preserving the intimate atmosphere that brings fans close to the action. Located in the heart of Alkmaar, the stadium's proximity to the city makes pre- and post-match socialising and sightseeing easy for supporters.
Throughout its history the stadium has hosted top-flight Eredivisie fixtures, cup matches and events for different age groups and genders, continuing to build its place in Dutch football culture.
AFAS Stadium Facts and Figures
AFAS Stadium has a seating capacity of 17,000, offering a close-up experience for crowds without compromising safety. It serves as a reliable top-flight venue, having been the home of AZ Alkmaar for 28 consecutive seasons in the Eredivisie. The stadium is used not just by the men's first team, but for matches of the AZ women's team and youth club tournaments as well.
The stadium is designed with optimized sightlines so spectators in virtually every corner and tier can enjoy unobstructed views. Sustainability features — such as a rainwater-harvesting system and LED lighting — are part of the venue's infrastructure, helping it operate more efficiently and responsibly.
For visitors on tours, lower-tiered seats provide an immersive front-row perspective of the players and crowd intensity. Mid-tier seating suits families or noise-sensitive fans who want to enjoy the drama without the full intensity of the front rows. Upper-tier seats near the 30-yard line give an excellent overhead view for visualising both the big picture and finer details of play.
Bus routes 1, 4, and 10 link the stadium to the city centre and nearby suburbs, while plentiful bike racks encourage supporters to travel by bicycle. These options contribute to the venue's strong connection to the local community and its accessibility.
AFAS Stadium Seating Guide
Best seats at AFAS Stadium
Optimal viewing experiences await in the lower sections, particularly front rows where professional football becomes almost tangible. These lower-tier seats deliver the immersive experience that fans often seek. Mid-tier seating is often recommended for families or attendees who prefer a less intense audio environment. Upper-level seats — especially those near the 30-yard line — offer a great overhead vantage point, attractive to students and budget-minded supporters because of their value.
For those seeking to maximise their match day experience, front-row positions in any section typically deliver exceptional value through unobstructed views and closeness to the atmosphere of the crowd.
