Dutch Eredivisie History

Ajax tops the list of all time champions with 36 titles, followed by PSV with 27 and Feyenoord with 16. Together these three clubs have won most of the Eredivisie, with no other team winning the competition since AZ in 2009.

While not the largest league, it has been very influential around the world. Ajax's Total Football team of the early 1970s won three straight European Cups and influenced how the game is played. Feyenoord won the European Cup in 1970 and PSV in 1988. Ajax won it again in 1995 with a squad built almost entirely from their own youth academy.

That philosophy is still in operation today. Cruyff, Van Basten, Bergkamp, Robben, Van Dijk, De Jong and De Ligt all started out playing for Dutch clubs, and the Eredivisie remains one of the best ways to go from youth football to some of the biggest clubs in the world.

There are 18 teams competing for 34 matchdays over 306 fixtures from August to May, with a winter break between 20 December and 8 January.

The winner and runner-up will qualify for the league phase of the Champions League, while third will enter qualifying. There are also berths in the Europa League and Conference League. The winner of the KNVB Cup will earn a European spot too.

17th and 18th will be relegated, while 16th will face teams from the Eerste Divisie in the playoffs for a place in next season's top flight. The playoff rounds usually last until June.

2025/26 Eredivisie Champions

PSV Eindhoven secured their 27th Eredivisie crown, a third successive title, on 5 April, with several games still remaining in the campaign. They accumulated 84 points, finishing 19 ahead of second-placed Feyenoord, and went 18 games without defeat in the second half of the season. Ayase Ueda scored 25 goals in total to lead the scoring charts.

NEC Nijmegen were the standout team of the year, scoring 77 goals and finishing third, which qualified them for the Champions League. Ajax ended up fifth, entering the Conference League instead, while AZ won the KNVB Cup and secured a Europa League spot, along with Twente.

Volendam, NAC Breda and Heracles Almelo were sent down, with ADO Den Haag, Cambuur and Willem II coming up in their place.

The Top Teams for the 2026/27 Eredivisie Season

PSV have the opportunity to win a fourth straight title under the guidance of Peter Bosz. They sold Ismael Saibari to Bayern Munich at the World Cup, but they've brought in Sven Mijnans from AZ in his stead, and the Philips Stadion is always full, with a capacity of 35,000.

Míchel has been appointed at Ajax, and they've also brought in Marcos Leonardo from Al-Hilal for roughly €18 million, which suggests that they are aiming higher than the fifth place they achieved last term. The Johan Cruyff Arena is the biggest stadium in the Netherlands, seating 55,865.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is returning to manage Feyenoord, and De Kuip continues to be the most intimidating venue in the nation, with a capacity of 47,500. There are other clubs, like NEC, Twente, AZ and Utrecht, who could realistically go for Europe, too.

How to Catch the Eredivisie Live

The Netherlands is the ideal destination for an away trip, especially when it comes to football. You're never more than an hour and a half from one major city to another, like Amsterdam to Rotterdam or Eindhoven to Utrecht, the stadiums are generally near the city centres, and you can easily fit two or three games into a weekend.

It's also the atmosphere that will excite you the most. De Kuip in Rotterdam is an old-style stadium from 1937 that traps the noise incredibly well, and Feyenoord's fans don't quit until the whistle goes. Meanwhile, the smaller stadiums — Het Kasteel, De Adelaarshorst, the Euroborg — have a vibe that you won't find in England anymore.

Two big matches define the calendar: De Klassieker, Feyenoord versus Ajax, and De Topper, Ajax versus PSV. Both are proper events, and both are some of the hardest to get tickets for in the Eredivisie.

Before buying Dutch football tickets you need to understand one thing about how Dutch clubs work. They have a club card scheme, and for certain key fixtures you need a supporter card to be able to purchase tickets directly from the club. Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV all sell tickets to season ticket holders and cardholders before anyone else, and De Klassieker and De Topper hardly ever go on general sale.

As well, away fans are banned from De Klassieker and a number of other potentially high-risk fixtures, which has been the case for years. Make sure a match allows visiting fans before you base your holiday around it.

Then there are two grounds that are simply too small. Excelsior's capacity is 4,500 and Telstar's 5,338. This means any game at either venue will be the most limited in terms of supply no matter who they're playing.

How Much Do Dutch Eredivisie Tickets Cost?

It's one of the best value football leagues in Western Europe.

Average and mid-tier teams charge between €20 and €35 for an adult ticket for a regular league match. Fortuna Sittard, PEC Zwolle, Go Ahead Eagles, Heerenveen and Groningen are the cheapest, and even cheaper prices apply to child and concession tickets.

Twente, Utrecht, AZ and NEC are in the mid-price bracket at around €30-€50 per adult for a league match, but more for European evenings or big games.

The big three – Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord – command the highest prices. A normal home fixture costs more than everyone else, and De Klassieker and De Topper cost several times that. The Champions League matches at the Philips Stadion and De Kuip this season will be the most expensive tickets in the Eredivisie.

When To Buy Dutch Eredivisie Tickets

The Dutch do the fixture schedule right. Matchweeks 1-12 for this season were announced in June, with Matchweeks 13-21 confirmed in early September and the rest in December. In other words, much more advance planning is possible than in the Premier League or La Liga.

For De Topper on 5 September and De Klassieker on 29 November, buy now. Those two fixtures aren't going to become easier to get later, and the club card scheme means that few tickets will ever hit the open market.

For regular Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord fixtures, three to six weeks is the optimum time. For all other games you can wait quite a while, and many clubs still sell tickets in the last week.

There are two exceptions: Excelsior and Telstar. With their small capacities of 4,500 and 5,338, these matches are guaranteed to sell out against the big three clubs. Whichever ground you choose, we would book it as early as possible.
