Primeira Liga Tournament Info

Now known as Liga Portugal Betclic for sponsorship reasons, this is the 93rd season of the Primeira Liga. There are 18 clubs playing each other twice, over 34 matchdays, with three points for a win and one for a draw.

The Primeira Liga is one of the tightest title races in Europe. In fact, only five clubs have ever won the Primeira Liga, with Benfica, Porto and Sporting CP having claimed all but two titles in the league's history. And while these three dominate, they're genuinely close rivals. Last season, Porto won the title by six points. The season before, the gap was similar.

Portugal is also Europe's most productive selling league, with many of its finest players – Ronaldo, Figo, Eusébio, Rúben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Darwin Núñez and Viktor Gyökeres, to name a few – making their way to bigger leagues. In fact, the Primeira Liga is the last stop before the Premier League for many South American and African stars.

Primeira Liga History

Since the introduction of the Primeira Liga in 1934, only three clubs have really been capable of challenging for the championship – almost invariably the same three. Benfica are the dominant force in the competition with 38 titles, Porto have claimed 31 – they were crowned champions last season – and Sporting CP have won it 21 times. The only non-big three winners have been Belenenses in 1946 and Boavista in 2001.

And perhaps surprisingly given the nation's population size of around ten million, Portugal has an excellent European record. Benfica won back-to-back European Cups in 1961 and 1962 with Eusébio. Porto have won the tournament twice – once in 1987 and then under José Mourinho in 2004. They've also won two Europa Leagues, in 2003 and 2011. Meanwhile, Sporting won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1964.

Last season produced a bit of an anomaly in Portuguese football when Torreense, a second-division side, won the Taça de Portugal – beating Sporting in the final – and qualified for the Europa League. They then lost the final of the Liga Portugal 2 promotion play-offs and thus ended the season still in the second division. It's only happened once before.

Primeira Liga Format

Eighteen clubs, 34 matchdays, 306 fixtures, August to May.

The top two teams will be entered in the league phase of the Champions League, while third place will enter the qualifying rounds. Places in the Europa League and Conference League also follow. The Taça de Portugal winner is also guaranteed a European spot – which we saw last season with Torreense.

The bottom two teams are automatically relegated to Liga Portugal 2 and the 16th-placed side takes part in a two-legged playoff with the third-placed team in the second tier.

Previous Season's Primeira Liga Winners

Porto secured the 2025/26 Primeira Liga, their 31st, six points ahead of Sporting CP. Luis Javier Suárez was the leading scorer with 28 goals and Porto ran off an 11-game winning streak throughout the season.

Benfica went 34 games unbeaten (the longest such run in the division) but failed to avoid a draw-heavy spell and slipped out of the top two, securing a place in the Europa League instead. Braga took the Conference League spot.

Tondela and AVS were relegated to make way for Marítimo as Liga Portugal 2 champions and Académico de Viseu.

The highest attendance of the season was 66,366 when Benfica hosted Porto at the Estádio da Luz in March. The average attendance was 11,979.

Top Teams for the 2026/27 Primeira Liga

Porto go into the season as slight favourites, being the only one of the big three not forced into a rebuild. They retained their title-winning core and brought in Jakub Kiwior from Arsenal for around €17 million, while André Silva returned to the club on a free transfer.

Sporting CP had a difficult summer, losing three key players for a total of €129 million and rebuilding the squad around Gonçalo Inácio, who was the highest-rated player in the league last year.

Benfica have begun a new era under Marco Silva following the departure of Mourinho to Real Madrid and have made significant changes to most areas of the squad. The Estádio da Luz is still the biggest stadium in Portugal and is known for its intense atmosphere.

Outside of the big three, Braga and Vitória de Guimarães are well-established European contenders while Famalicão, Gil Vicente and Moreirense also had strong seasons.

Attend the Primeira Liga In Person

Portugal is arguably the best value country for football quality and atmosphere in Western Europe. Average attendance was 11,979 last season, which doesn't seem like a lot until you consider that this is the average including crowds of a few thousand at the smaller clubs and 66,366 for the Benfica vs Porto game.

The three big stadiums are worth seeing in themselves. The Estádio da Luz holds 64,000 spectators and has an incredible atmosphere as the Benfica eagle flies around the stadium before kickoff. The Dragão in Porto is steep and tight. The Alvalade is the newest of the three.

And the one that catches people by surprise is Braga. The Estádio Municipal is built into the side of a quarry, with a sheer rock wall behind one of the goals and no stands behind either end. It's one of the most unique stadiums in the world.

Lisbon and Porto are three hours apart by train, and both cities have several top-flight clubs, making a long weekend trip to see two or three matches perfectly feasible.

100% Genuine Primeira Liga Tickets With Buyer Protection

Each ticket is authenticated prior to going on sale, and funds aren't released until tickets are verified as having been received by the buyer. If a seller is unable to provide the tickets, if the tickets provided aren't what was advertised or if the match is cancelled, the buyer is protected.

Portugal has one characteristic that makes buying tickets more challenging than in most other European leagues. Dates and kick-off times are confirmed very late — sometimes just ten days before the match. Fixture lists are published in July by matchweek, but the specific day and time depend on TV and European fixtures and are announced with the least advance notice of any major European league.

This is important for travel planning. A match that was pencilled in for a Saturday can be played on a Monday night at 21:15, and Portuguese kick-off times tend to be later than the rest of Europe.

The Big Three also run socio membership schemes which absorb most of their capacity, and O Clássico and the Lisbon derby are rarely put up for general sale.

Primeira Liga Ticket Prices

The Primeira Liga is one of the cheapest top-flight leagues in Western Europe.

Smaller clubs are very affordable. Moreirense, Arouca, Casa Pia, Estrela da Amadora and Académico de Viseu regularly sell adult tickets for €10-€20, which is cheaper than most European cinemas.

Mid-table clubs — Braga, Vitória de Guimarães, Famalicão, Gil Vicente, Rio Ave — tend to cost €20-€40, increasing for European nights and when the Big Three visit.

Benfica, Porto and Sporting charge much more for their own home matches, and O Clássico and the Lisbon derby are entirely separate markets. Those three matches a season are the only games in Portugal that are comparable to English or Spanish prices.

When to Buy Primeira Liga Tickets

The late scheduling is what you need to plan for. The matchweek pairings were announced on 7 July, so you know who plays who, but the exact date and kick-off time might not be known until around ten days before the match.

For O Clássico on the weekend of 20 September and the Lisbon derbies in December and May, buy as soon as tickets go on sale. Those are the three matches where supply really dries up.

For Big Three home matches against lower-ranked opposition, three to six weeks before the match is plenty of time. For all other matches there is plenty of flexibility, and many clubs in Portugal still sell on the day of the match.

If you're planning a trip around a fixture, always allow for a spare day on either side of it. You could book flights for a Saturday afternoon match, only for the kick-off to be confirmed ten days out as Monday evening.

Latest Primeira Liga News

The 2026/27 Primeira Liga season kicked off on 7 August, with Benfica getting things underway at home to promoted side Académico de Viseu, while Porto begin their campaign to retain the league title without significant rebuilding.

Benfica saw José Mourinho depart for Real Madrid over the summer, replaced him with Marco Silva, and carried out one of the biggest squad overhauls in Europe. Meanwhile, Sporting sold three of their best players for a combined €129m and restructured around young centre-back Gonçalo Inácio. Porto completed the signing of Jakub Kiwior from Arsenal and brought back striker André Silva.

Five Portuguese teams will take part in European competitions this season. Porto and Sporting are in the Champions League, Benfica and Torreense are in the Europa League, and Braga compete in the Conference League. It's Torreense who make the most interesting story – they'll be in Europe despite playing second-division football at home.

O Clássico, Porto vs Benfica, is set for the weekend of 20 September at the Estádio do Dragão. The first Lisbon derby comes on the weekend of 27 December at the Estádio da Luz, with the return fixture played at the Estádio José Alvalade on 8 May.
