The Scottish Premiership, commonly known as the William Hill Premiership or Prìomh Lìog na h-Alba, is the top tier of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). Established with the formation of the SPFL in 2013, it features 12 professional clubs competing in a round-robin format across a season running from August to May. The league represents Scotland’s premier domestic football competition, with its champion earning qualification for European tournaments.

Scottish Premiership Tournament Info

Also known as the William Hill Premiership after the current sponsor, it's the 14th season of the Scottish Premiership and the 130th of Scotland's top flight.

There are twelve teams playing each other three times per team for 33 games. After that, the league splits into a top six and a bottom six, where each team plays the remaining five in their group once more. This brings the total to 38 games.

The split is scheduled for the weekend of April 10-11, 2027. Once the split occurs, any team in the bottom half cannot finish ahead of any team in the top half, regardless of how many points they've accumulated. The team finishing in last place gets automatically relegated, while the team in eleventh plays a two-legged play-off against the winners of the Scottish Championship playoffs.

Scottish Premiership History

Scottish league football started in 1890, and has seen two teams from Glasgow dominate nearly the whole thing. Rangers have won 55 league titles, and Celtic have 56 after last season's crown. Only a few other teams — Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs, Dundee, Dundee United, Motherwell, Kilmarnock — have managed to take the trophy home.

It's really been Celtic's time in the modern era. They were five-time consecutive champions last season. That was their 12th Premiership title and 56th Scottish championship overall, sealed on the final day against Hearts in front of a 59,079 crowd at Celtic Park. Rangers' last title came in the 2020/21 season under Steven Gerrard, going the entire 38-game season unbeaten.

Aside from those two, it was Aberdeen's win over Real Madrid in the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup Final that remains the biggest night in Scottish continental competition. And Celtic won the 1967 European Cup with a team made up entirely of players born within a thirty-mile radius of Celtic Park, a feat no European champion has come close to repeating.

Scottish Premiership Format

Twelve teams. 33 games. The split. Five more games. 38 games total, running from August to May.

Europe qualification is determined by league standing and cup success. Celtic and Hearts qualified through league play for the Champions League, Rangers qualified for the Europa League and Motherwell and Hibs qualified for the Conference League, following last season's results.

That picture is getting tighter. Scotland's UEFA coefficient has dropped, and it's thought the country will lose one of its European spots for next year, making the top four more important than the top five.

2025/26 Scottish Premiership Winners

Celtic clinched the 2025/26 Premiership on the final day, beating Hearts at Celtic Park in front of 59,079 fans to claim their fifth successive championship. It was one of the tightest races we've seen in a long time, with Hearts taking Celtic to the final afternoon.

Top scorer of the league was Tawanda Maswanhise with 17 goals, Rangers had the longest unbeaten run (16 games) and Livingston were relegated after a 31-game winless streak. St Johnstone returned immediately as Champions of the Championship.

One of the highlights of the season was the attendance figures, with 4,082,619 fans attending 228 Premiership matches at an average of 17,906 per game. That's amazing for a twelve-team league in a country of just 5.5m people.

2026/27 Scottish Premiership Top Teams

Celtic look set to win a sixth successive Premiership title under Martin O'Neill, who was appointed permanent manager this summer. Celtic Park can hold almost 60,000 and sells out for every big game.

Derek McInnes is Rangers' new manager and he has been backed in the transfer market with the signings of Ivor Pandur, Vanja Dragojevic and Ross McCrorie. Ibrox Stadium is one of the greatest grounds in Britain, and Old Firm games there are the hardest tickets in Scotland.

Last season Hearts took Celtic all the way to the final day and start the campaign with strong ambitions, although some key men departed with McInnes. Hibernian, Aberdeen and Motherwell all have European experience and a reasonable chance of being top four, while Falkirk are in their second season back in the top flight.

Visit the Scottish Premiership

Old Firm is why most people visit, and they have earned that reputation. A match between Celtic and Rangers features two clubs whose rivalry is woven into the fabric of Glasgow, contested in front of almost 60,000 at Celtic Park or 51,000 at Ibrox, and the atmosphere is truly something else.

There is much more to the league than that though. The Edinburgh derby between Hearts and Hibernian is one of the oldest derbies in the world. The Dundee derby is contested between two grounds less than a hundred yards apart on the same road – the closest senior derby in Britain. Plus, the likes of Pittodrie, Tynecastle and Fir Park are traditional grounds with supporters right on top of the action and no running track.

Then there's value. Average attendance last season was 17,906 per match and, excluding the two Glasgow sides, a top flight Scottish match costs a fraction of its English equivalent.

100% Genuine Scottish Premiership Tickets with Buyer Guarantee

All listings are vetted prior to publication and your money is held until the tickets are validated as being received. If a seller doesn't deliver, the tickets aren't as described, or a game is cancelled, you're covered.

It's only the Glasgow teams that present real difficulty. They both have a significant season ticket membership that makes up the vast majority of their capacity, and Old Firm games are not sold in anything like sufficient quantities for general purchase. Away tickets for those games have been cut back dramatically in recent years, and they are allocated via club ballot.

Beyond that it's a much simpler situation, with a number of clubs selling on the day. It's primarily the Glasgow fixtures, European evenings and the Edinburgh derby that the ticket resale market is focused on.

One thing to bear in mind: Scottish kick off times are subject to change regularly for Sky Sports, which is broadcasting up to 60 games this season. Check the time before you make travel arrangements.

Scottish Premiership Ticket Prices

Prices are heavily divided between the Glasgow teams and all the others.

On the cheap end of the scale, Kilmarnock, St Mirren, St Johnstone, Falkirk, Dundee and Motherwell price adult tickets starting at around £20 – £30, with concessions significantly less. Those are actual top flight games at prices normally associated with England's lower leagues, and midweek games cost even less.

Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs and Dundee United are priced slightly more highly, with prices around £25 – £35 for a regular league match, but going up for the derbies and European evenings.

Celtic and Rangers are a separate pricing category. Normal home fixtures begin at a higher price point than the rest of the league, and the Old Firm is the most expensive regular season ticket in British football, short of the biggest Premier League derbies. Demand significantly outstrips supply.

When to Buy Scottish Premiership Tickets

The full fixture list was published in June, so every date is now fixed. Kick off times will vary according to broadcaster, but the fixtures will not change.

For the Old Firm, buy as early as possible. The 20 September match at Celtic Park, the 2 January game at Ibrox and the 27 February return are the three set dates ahead of the league split, and there may be a fourth at Ibrox following the split. None of those games will see prices ease.

For the Edinburgh derby and away days at Celtic or Rangers at smaller stadiums, allow three to six weeks. Those away allocations are very limited and sell out quickly.

For everything else, there is considerable flexibility. Games in the lower half of the table involving Kilmarnock, St Mirren, Falkirk or Dundee are often available until the final week, and sometimes on the day.

How does the split work in the Scottish Premiership?

All 12 clubs play each other three times over the course of 33 matches, before the league splits into a top six and a bottom six. Who has the most Scottish league titles?

Celtic, with 56, including the fifth successive Premiership title last season. Rangers are second with 55 titles, and the two teams have won almost all of the Scottish championships over the past 100 years.
