The English Football League Championship, commonly known as the EFL Championship and commercially referred to as the Sky Bet Championship, is the second-highest tier of professional football in England and Wales. It features 24 clubs competing each season from August to May for promotion to the Premier League and to avoid relegation to League One. Serving as the top division of the English Football League, it provides a vital pathway in the English football pyramid.

EFL Championship Tickets

EFL Championship Tickets give you access to the best supported second division in world football. The 2026/27 season started on Friday 14 August 2026 and runs until 1 May 2027 – 24 clubs, 46 matchdays, 552 matches and for the first time, a six-team promotion play-off instead of four. West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley were all relegated from the Premier League. Bolton Wanderers, Cardiff City and Lincoln City were all promoted from League One. Southampton started the season on minus four points. Last season, average attendance was 22,116, higher than many other European top flights. EFL Championship Tickets can be purchased from all 24 clubs, with secure transactions and buyer protection.

EFL Championship Tournament Info

The Championship is the second tier of English football and the 11th season under this name. There are twenty-four clubs that will play each other home and away in 46 matchdays. A win earns 3 points, a draw earns 1 point. The top two teams will be promoted automatically to the Premier League and the bottom three will be relegated to League One.

What catches most people off-guard is the sheer size of the competition. Last season there were 12,208,071 spectators across the Championship, at an average of 22,116 per match. This is more than Serie A, Ligue 1 and most other European top leagues. Clubs such as West Ham, Southampton, Norwich and Sheffield United all have grounds big enough to be in the top flight of almost any country in Europe.

And it is without question the most unpredictable league in Europe. There is no single dominant club. There is no financial chasm similar to the Premier League. And the promotion race regularly comes down to the final day.

EFL Championship History

This second tier has been around since 1892. It has been known by its current name since 2004. And it has been England's most gruelling division from the start. Forty-six league games and then the cup competitions. No winter break. And the prize for promotion is now worth more than £100 million.

The list of famous former champions tells the tale of the last decade and a half: Leeds United, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Newcastle have all been in the Championship in recent years before bouncing back to the Premier League. Wolves won the division in 2018 and are back in it for the first time since. And Burnley have been relegated and promoted so often that the term 'yo-yo club' isn't just a cliché anymore.

And the grounds tell the tale too. Deepdale is the oldest football ground in the world still in use. Since 1875, it has been home to Preston North End. Bramall Lane, home of Sheffield United since 1889, is the oldest major stadium anywhere still hosting professional football.

EFL Championship Format

24 clubs, 46 matchdays, 552 fixtures, August to May. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 point. The top two will be promoted automatically. The main alteration for 2026/27 comes beneath them: the play-offs are now open to six teams rather than four. Third and fourth place finishers get a direct entry to the two-legged semi-finals, while fifth to eighth are pitted in a preliminary round to try to join them. The final takes place at Wembley and is still arguably the most lucrative game in domestic football.

On the flip side, the bottom three teams are relegated to League One without a play-off opportunity. The season's games take place over 33 weekend rounds, nine midweek rounds and four bank holiday rounds, making the Championship the busiest schedule in Europe.

2025/26 EFL Championship Season

Coventry City were crowned champions of the 2025/26 EFL Championship, promoted to the Premier League along with Ipswich Town and play-off champions Hull City. Swansea City's Žan Vipotnik finished as the top scorer with 23 goals.

Oxford United, Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday were relegated, with the latter experiencing a winless run of 39 matches during the campaign. The highest attendance of the season was 34,988 when Middlesbrough hosted Bristol City in March.

Favourites for the 2026/27 EFL Championship

The three relegated sides enter as the early favourites. West Ham have managed to retain much of their squad and are predicted to gain immediate promotion, while Wolves and Burnley are expected to trail closely. It will be the Irons' first campaign outside the Premier League in 14 years, and the London Stadium will stage Championship action for the first time.

Last season's play-off runners-up Middlesbrough look promising ahead of another strong challenge. Meanwhile, investment in Birmingham City and Wrexham means they are now expected to feature in the promotion picture, the latter narrowly missing out on a play-off spot last season.

Despite beginning the season with a four-point deduction, after being ejected from last season's play-offs, Southampton are still expected to play a part. Norwich City, Sheffield United and Millwall are the clear contenders to challenge, while Lincoln City return to the second tier after a 65-year absence.

England's second tier represents the best sporting bargain in the country and it is not even close. Crowds regularly fill Championship stadiums, the schedule is packed tight and tickets cost only a fraction of what Premier League matches ask for, all whilst often producing an electrifying atmosphere.

There is immense variety across the division. You might find yourself watching an attendance of 62,500 at the London Stadium and then attending a match at the Racecourse Ground which can hold just 10,000. Deepdale can trace its history back to 1875, while Bramall Lane dates from 1889, yet both stage regular league action twice a month. Fratton Park, The Den and Turf Moor create the sort of noise that Premier League new-builds have found impossible to emulate.

Midweek is where the Championship really shines. The schedule features nine midweek rounds during the campaign, with Tuesday and Wednesday nights seeing clubs battle under the floodlights in front of packed stands, making it easily the division's finest showcase.

100% Genuine EFL Championship Tickets With Buyer Guarantee

All listings are checked before being published. Payment is held until we confirm that the tickets have been sent to you. Should a seller fail to deliver, if the tickets are different to what they were advertised as or if a match is called off, then your buyer guarantee will protect you.

Generally speaking, getting tickets for the Championship is easier than the Premier League. The exception are the relegated clubs. West Ham, Wolves and Burnley are all large enough clubs to have full season tickets at Championship level, and home games go on sale through membership only. Away tickets at smaller grounds are the hardest tickets in the division.

Category A matches, usually when a relegated club visits a mid-table team, are priced separately from the rest of the season so check the category first before expecting the same price as every other game.

EFL Championship Ticket Prices

Championship tickets are significantly cheaper than the Premier League, and there is a huge range of prices.

Prices at the bottom of the table start at around £20 to £30 for an adult for a Category B or C game and concessions are much cheaper. Mid-table clubs such as Watford, Preston, Charlton, Bristol City and Stoke tend to be some of the best-value grounds in the division.

However, Category A games change this. When West Ham, Wolves or Burnley visit, the host club raises the price and the demand skyrockets. This is where the secondary market operates.

The other end of the market is the relegated clubs, when at home, and the play-offs. Games at the London Stadium attract the same sort of crowd as the Premier League during the Championship season and any game in April which involves promotion or play-off qualification can be priced higher than face value.

The Championship Play-off Final at Wembley in May is a completely different market and arguably the most expensive single ticket in English football after the FA Cup final.

When to Buy EFL Championship Tickets

Since the entire schedule was released on the 25th June, every single date is known. This is a major advantage over the Premier League where fixtures can be moved at any point due to television coverage.

If you're looking for tickets to a regular mid-table game, three to four weeks ahead is fine and many grounds sell them on the day, so you don't need to rush to buy in advance.

Category A games, relegated clubs at home, and any local derby should be bought as soon as tickets are available. West Ham versus Millwall in September is the one to look out for as both clubs haven't played each other since 2012.

For the play-offs, keep an eye on the market from March onwards. Second leg semi-finals can be sold out within hours after a team qualifies for the next round and it's best to get the final before the teams are confirmed.

Southampton start with minus four points after being excluded from last season's play-offs. Lincoln City return to the second tier for the first time in 65 years while Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff City complete the promoted trio from League One.

The first EFL Championship match to be played at the London Stadium sees West Ham take on Charlton Athletic on 22 August before they travel to Millwall at The Den in September for the first meeting between the sides since 2012.
