USA's Path to Match 94
USA came into their home World Cup with huge expectation on their side and they certainly did not disappoint as they won two games from the start of the group stage. The USA started out playing a 4-1 win against Paraguay at Los Angeles and a 2-0 victory in the second game against Australia at Seattle to get two wins for their opening game for a World Cup in history for the co-host. With both these results, the USA won the group and were able to go on into the knockout stages with a match-up against Bosnia and Herzegovina at Santa Clara. USA were in for a tough time here but still managed to come out with a 2-0 victory thanks to goals by Folarin Balogun and a Malik Tillman free-kick. But this match-up did come with the consequence that Balogun, the USA player with three goals to his name and probably the best player in the USMNT team received a straight red card for the match and thus missed the USA vs Belgium match in the Round of 16. But still it was enough for the USA to get through the first knockout phase of the World Cup tournament for the first time since 2002, and their first knockout win in two attempts in the round of 16.
Belgium's Path to Match 94
After starting off Belgium's tournament in a very slow way, the Red Devils finally got it right just when needed. After going back-to-back with a 1-1 draw against Egypt in the group opener at Seattle and a draw against Iran in Los Angeles with the team failing to score a goal against either of these sides, people started talking about Belgium being the biggest disappointment in this World Cup tournament. But Belgium went on to win the group in the knockout stages with a 5-1 win in a group game against New Zealand in Vancouver. It's the perfect time of the season for Belgium.
The first knockout round of World Cup 2026 produced some drama. It wasn't until the second half that the Americans found the back of the net in Seattle, where Belgium had taken the lead through Romelu Lukaku. Captain Youri Tielemans equalized late in the game, completing the comeback before sealing the victory with a late penalty. The Red Devils will take the field again at Lumen Field in the Round of 16 with an understanding that this could be the final time for a group of players that have worked hard to get this far.

USA vs. Belgium Round of 16: Match Preview
This is a matchup with a rich history. The two sides have faced each other seven times, including the first-ever match they have played against each other at the first World Cup in 1930 — an occasion where the Americans triumphed 3-0 while also making their competitive international debut. Since then, Belgium have won every subsequent meeting against the Red Dragons, and the USMNT have not won a game against them in 94 years.
The most significant game between the two was the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Belgium defeated the United States 2-1 in extra time of a round-of-16 knockout tie. In that contest, goalkeeper Tim Howard made 16 saves — a record for the competition — while Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku eventually secured a win for the Europeans, with Julian Green making a late stop to the Americans before the final whistle. Now more than a decade later, the two sides are set to meet again — this time in the United States — in the knockouts, a place where the USMNT can make its mark once again.
For their opponents, the stakes will also feel personal as this is widely seen as the last World Cup for Belgium's golden generation, a side that reached the top of the podium in 2018 but were eliminated at the group stage in 2022. Players like De Bruyne, Lukaku and Thibaut Courtois are trying to get their hands on the world's biggest prize.
Current Form and Key Stats
For the United States, the mood of the country has built up around a team with a recent knockouts win over Bosnia. They'll have to get creative attacking-wise without the suspended Balogun. Belgium were not quite on point initially but found an offensive rhythm. Their recent victory over Senegal showcased both their vulnerabilities and their tenacity. While history and current form appear to give Belgium an advantage — remembering that they claimed a comfortable 5-2 victory in Atlanta back in March — the bookmakers are actually tipping the American hosts to edge the encounter. This reflects the incredible confidence being placed in the current USA squad.
Players to follow from the USA:
- Christian Pulisic – As the team's talisman and primary attacking spark, he will have extra motivation in the absence of Balogun.
- Weston McKennie – A key engine in midfield; his recent performances against Bosnia were among the team's finest.
- Malik Tillman – The source of a vital round of 32 equalizer and an important creative outlet in the attacking third.
- Tim Ream – The veteran leader of a backline that has recorded two clean sheets through the knockout stages so far.
Players to follow from Belgium:
- Kevin De Bruyne – One of his generation's best playmakers. It looks like he will be taking over at No. 10 and steering Belgium's creativity for what seems likely to be his final World Cup.
- Youri Tielemans – The skipper and the man for the winning goal in round of 32; he anchors the midfield and has already found the scoreline.
- Romelu Lukaku – A record-breaking goal-getter in his country's history; his physicality and ability to bring others into play is crucial.
- Thibaut Courtois – An all-world goalkeeper who is in the rare category of a keeper able to carry his team single-handedly.
