The quarter-finals is the 3rd knock-out round in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 8 teams who won in the Round of 16 Tickets advance to this round, with the quarter-finals bracket already decided at the start of the knock-out stage.

Each quarter-final match is a one-leg match. In case of a tie after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time will be played. If the match is still tied after that, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout. The 4 quarter-finals winners will advance to the semifinals tickets, while the 4 quarter-finals losers will be eliminated from the tournament.

The World Cup quarter-finals stage has provided some of the best football matches in history. Brazil vs. France, Argentina vs. England, Germany vs. Italy, those are the matches that go beyond sports to be etched in the culture. In the 2022 FIFA World Cup, 2 of the best matches in the tournament were in the quarter-finals stage: Brazil vs. Croatia and Argentina vs. Netherlands, both ended in dramatic penalty shootouts. The 2026 World Cup quarter-finals, with the matches being played in front of packed stadiums across North America, are expected to be just as exciting.

Why the Quarterfinals Matter

In many ways, the quarter-finals are the most important round in the World Cup. It is the round where the pretenders are separated from the contenders.

For teams that have dreams of lifting the trophy, the quarter-finals is the first real test on their way to achieving their goal. A win in the quarter-finals will mean that the team has made it to the final 4 of the tournament.

On the other hand, the quarter-finals could also be the round where the defending champions are eliminated.

The stakes are high in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Win the match and the team will be 1 step closer to winning the trophy. Lose the match and the World Cup journey will end for the team.

Do you want to be in the stadium to watch your team play in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup? Look for World Cup 2026 Quarter Finals tickets on the Ticombo website. The quarter finals are perhaps the best stage of any World Cup. The number of teams has been whittled down to eight, and there really is very little between any of them. Any team that makes it to the quarter finals is truly a contender to win the whole tournament. The games are typically close, tactical and heartbreaking for the loser.

The best thing about the quarter finals is that the quality of football is always world class and the stakes are always massive. You can play it safe in the group stage. Some teams in the Round of 32 and Round of 16 are just mismatched. But not in the quarter finals. There are no gimmes. Each of these teams has qualified, made it through the group stage and won two knockout games.

Some of the greatest World Cup quarter final matches of all time include England vs. Argentina in 1986 (see: Maradona's Hand of God and Goal of the Century), Brazil vs. France in 2006 (see: Zidane masterclass), Germany vs. Argentina in both 2006 and 2010, and of course the absolutely bonkers Brazil vs. Croatia penalty shootout in Qatar 2022.

From an in-stadium experience, the quarter finals are the best. You have smaller crowds than the group stage (most fair weather fans have left by then) but the most hardcore of each nation. The energy, the drama, the raw emotion. For any soccer fan, this is a bucket list experience.

The 2026 quarter finals will take place at the largest and most prestigious stadiums in North America. These stadiums were selected for the biggest events of the tournament. There are only four games, over three days. Each one is a spectacle in its own right.
