Portugal World Cup History

Portugal have appeared in eight FIFA World Cups prior to 2026, with their best finish being third place in 1966 – a tournament where the legendary Eusébio scored nine goals.

World Cup highlights: Portugal.

  • 1966 (England): THIRD PLACE – Eusébio top scorer (9 goals)
  • 1986 (Mexico): Group stage
  • 2002 (South Korea/Japan): Group stage – Shock loss to South Korea
  • 2006 (Germany): FOURTH PLACE – Beat England on penalties in QF
  • 2010 (South Africa): Round of 16 – Lost to Spain 1-0
  • 2014 (Brazil): Group stage
  • 2018 (Russia): Round of 16 – Ronaldo hat-trick vs Spain in group
  • 2022 (Qatar): Quarter-finals – Lost to Morocco 1-0
  • 2026 (USA/Mexico/Canada): 9th appearance

Portugal's most iconic World Cup moments include the 1966 run where Eusébio led them to a stunning third-place finish on their tournament debut, and the 2006 campaign where Luiz Felipe Scolari's side reached the semi-finals, memorably defeating England on penalties in the quarter-finals before losing to France. The heartbreak of 2022 remains fresh – a controversial defeat to Morocco in the quarter-finals ended what many expected to be Ronaldo's last best chance at World Cup glory. Portugal will be desperate to go one better in 2026.

Meet the men tasked with spearheading Portugal's World Cup adventure:

  • Cristiano Ronaldo - Al-Nassr, 41, captain, all-time leading scorer (135+ goals)
  • Bruno Fernandes - Manchester United, midfielder, playmaker
  • Vitinha - Paris Saint-Germain, midfielder, 3rd in 2025 Ballon d'Or
  • João Neves - Paris Saint-Germain, midfielder, rising star
  • Rafael Leão - AC Milan, winger, explosive pace
  • Bernardo Silva - Manchester City, midfielder, creative genius
  • Rúben Dias - Manchester City, defender, defensive leader
  • Gonçalo Ramos - Paris Saint-Germain, striker, hat-trick vs Switzerland 2022

Roberto Martínez has been the Portugal manager since January 2023. The Spanish coach – who won the FA Cup with Wigan and led Belgium to third place at the 2018 World Cup – has transformed Portugal into a dominant force. Under his leadership, Portugal went unbeaten in qualifying for Euro 2024, reached the quarter-finals of that tournament, and captured a second Nations League title in 2025 by defeating Spain in the final. His tactical flexibility and ability to manage star egos makes him the ideal coach to lead this golden generation to World Cup glory.
