Men's Nations League Tournament Information

The UEFA Nations League was established in 2018 to replace international friendlies with meaningful games, and it has been successful. It features 54 national teams divided into four divisions based on their rankings. Each game has implications for promotion, relegation, or qualification for the finals.

It operates as follows. Leagues A, B and C all have 16 teams in four groups of four playing six home and away games. League D has six teams in two groups of three playing four games. Teams are assigned to the leagues based on the final overall ranking of the previous edition.

For League A, group winners and runners-up will play two-legged quarter-finals in March 2027. The four winners advance to the finals in June, where they play a five-day knockout competition consisting of two semi-finals, a third-place play-off and a final. Third-placed teams enter the relegation play-offs, while fourth-placed teams are relegated automatically.

Men's Nations League History

Portugal won the inaugural 2019 edition on home soil. France won in 2021 in Milan. Spain won in 2023 at De Kuip. Portugal won again in 2025. They are the only country to have won the tournament twice.

The tournament has become one of the most popular events in international football. In the 2024/25 edition, there were 4,384,892 spectators across 188 matches, averaging 23,324 per match. Viktor Gyökeres was the top scorer with nine goals.

It has achieved its greatest success in lower divisions. Nations that had lost 6-0 in World Cup qualifying matches are now playing competitive football against teams of equal stature. League D has provided several of the smallest UEFA member nations with their first competitive wins.

Men's Nations League Format

Leagues A, B and C have six matchdays played over three international windows, and League D has four matchdays.

The 2026/27 calendar will use a long September/October window, which is the major change for this season. Matchdays one to four will be played between 24 September and 6 October. There will be four competitive matches in a fortnight instead of the usual two. Matchdays five and six will be played in November.

There is promotion and relegation between all four leagues. The League A group winners and runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals. The third-placed team plays a play-off against a League B runner-up. The fourth-placed team is relegated outright. It's the same story further down the pyramid, with League C and League D play-offs held separately in March 2028.

Portugal won the 2025 UEFA Nations League Finals, beating Spain to become the only team to win more than one title. France were third, and Germany fourth.

In League C and D, tickets are the easiest to get hold of in European international football, with many costing under €25 and some significantly less. League B is a step up in price, but tickets typically range from €30 to €70, depending on which nation is hosting and who the opposition is.

With League A, the ticket market gets a lot tighter. The bigger matches, such as England vs Spain, Netherlands vs Germany and Italy vs Belgium, are priced like major tournament games, and venues like Wembley Stadium and other large arenas across Europe charge more for their seats. There will also be a separate market for the finals in June 2027 once the host city is announced.

When to Buy Men's Nations League Tickets

The draw took place in February so all the fixtures have been decided, meaning there is no waiting for pairings to be announced. The national associations run several batches of sales over the summer and early autumn.

The first matchday starts on 24 September, so the September/October window is only weeks away rather than months. For the big marquee games in League A, these tickets are already selling.

The group stage draw was held in Brussels on 12 February 2026, creating Group A3, which features Spain, Croatia, England and Czechia. In Group A1, France were drawn alongside Italy, Belgium and Türkiye.
