Ligue 1, commonly known as French Ligue 1 and branded for sponsorship as Ligue 1 McDonald’s, is the top-tier men's professional football league in France organized by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). Founded in 1932, it features 20 clubs competing from August to May, including renowned teams like Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Marseille. Recognized as one of Europe’s top five domestic leagues, Ligue 1 offers qualification spots for UEFA Champions League and Europa League competitions.

French Ligue 1 Tickets

With the last two European champions hailing from Ligue 1, French Ligue 1 Tickets take you into the league where football royalty rules. The 2026/27 season will be the 89th edition of France's premier football competition, beginning on Sunday 23 August 2026 and ending on 29 May 2027. There are 18 teams, 34 matchdays and 306 games in the French Ligue 1 calendar and Paris Saint-Germain start the new season as five-time defending champions, following a record-breaking 14th league title. Troyes and Le Mans have come up from Ligue 2, the latter returning to the top flight after a 16-year absence. From Le Classique at the Parc des Princes to a Friday night under the lights at the Vélodrome, French Ligue 1 Tickets can be found for all 18 teams, with trusted tickets and full buyer protection guaranteed.

French Ligue 1 Tournament Details

Also known as Ligue 1 McDonald's, France's top division comprises 18 teams following a reduction from 20 in the 2023/24 season. The 18 teams play each other home and away, totalling 34 matchdays, with three points awarded for a win and one for a draw.

However, there's a very specific dynamic at work here. Paris Saint-Germain have won 14 of the last 15 league titles and are now back-to-back European champions, meaning the top end is dominated by one team while there's still a very open race beneath them for everything else. There were four French sides in the Champions League, two in the Europa League and one in the Conference League last term, meaning seven out of 18 Ligue 1 teams represented France in Europe.

This season, one thing stands out in particular. UK broadcasters have chosen not to buy the Ligue 1 TV rights for 2026/27, meaning there's no way to watch the French league on UK television. If you're based in the UK and want to watch the league, your only option is to go live, with French Ligue 1 Tickets your only gateway to the action.

French Ligue 1 History

The French championship started in 1932 and is one of Europe's most diverse leagues when it comes to champions. Saint-Étienne have won the title 10 times, while Marseille have claimed it nine times, Monaco and Nantes eight times each and Lyon seven times – including a seven-in-a-row streak between 2002 and 2008.

That was all before the advent of Paris Saint-Germain, whose rise to prominence started in 2011 after they were taken over by Qatar-based investment group QSI. Since then they've won a record 14 titles and in back-to-back seasons have claimed the UEFA Champions League, joining the small group of clubs to have retained the European Cup.

Marseille were the only French team to win the European Cup prior to that, beating AC Milan 1-0 in the 1993 European Cup final in Munich.

Ligue 1 has also long been considered Europe's best breeding ground for young talent. Kylian Mbappé, Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann and Michel Platini are just some of the world-class players to have come through its ranks and it's that track record that helps clubs like Lille, Lyon and Rennes remain competitive despite running on a small fraction of PSG's budget.

French Ligue 1 Format

18 teams, 34 matchdays, 306 fixtures, August to May. Three points for a win, one for a draw.

France currently have four Champions League berths available, with the top three going straight into the league phase and the fourth entering qualification. Teams finishing fifth and sixth qualify for the Europa League, the seventh-place team plays a playoff for a Europa Conference League spot, and the winner of the Coupe de France secures a berth. At the opposite end of the table, the teams finishing in 17th and 18th positions are relegated outright, while the side that finishes 16th faces a two-legged playoff against the third-place team from Ligue 2.

Games are played on Friday evenings, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons/evenings.

Last Season's French Ligue 1 Winners

PSG won the 2025/26 title, their 14th and fifth consecutive title, clinching the trophy with a game to spare on 13 May 2026 after beating nearest rivals Lens 2-0. Esteban Lepaul topped the scoring chart with 21 goals.

PSG, Lens, Lille and Lyon secured Champions League places, while Marseille and Rennes qualified for the Europa League and Monaco took the Conference League berth.

Nantes and Metz were relegated, with Metz enduring a winless streak stretching to 22 matches.

There were 8,385,849 spectators at the matches, with an average attendance of 27,405 per match. The highest crowd was 66,279 for Marseille's match against Brest in November, while Monaco had the lowest crowd at 4,810.

Top Teams for the 2026/27 French Ligue 1

PSG will look to retain the title having by far the best squad in France and a sold-out Parc des Princes every week. They have the most wanted fixtures in the country and Le Classique against Marseille on 7 February is the biggest fixture on the entire French schedule.

Lens were the closest challenge to PSG last season, and they boast the best atmosphere of any club in Ligue 1 at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, a stadium that can hold more people than the town has.

Lille and Lyon return to the Champions League. Marseille fill the 67,500 capacity Vélodrome and boast the loudest fans in the country.

Strasbourg, Nice, Brest and Toulouse all have European aspirations.

Paris FC are into their second season back in the top tier after an absence of 46 years, making the capital home to two Ligue 1 sides for the first time in many years.

France is one of the few nations that do two things well: tifos and noise. Lens is a great example of this with the 38,000-capacity Stade Bollaert-Delelis in a town of around 31,000 and the atmosphere in the Marek and Trannin stands is unrivalled anywhere in Europe.

The Vélodrome in Marseille at 67,500 is the loudest stadium in the country with the Virage Sud providing an intimidating sight on European nights.

There is huge variation in the grounds. The Parc des Princes began as a cycling track in 1897 and remains one of the best atmospheric stadiums in Europe. Monaco's Stade Louis II seats 16,000 and attracted the smallest crowds last season, making it one of the most accessible tickets and the strangest matchdays in world football with top-flight football in a country with a population of just 40,000.

And value. French clubs price significantly below the English and Spanish equivalents, and outside PSG and Marseille a decent seat at a Ligue 1 match is cheaper than a restricted view in the Premier League.

100% Real French Ligue 1 Tickets with Buyer Protection

All listings are checked before being published, and money is only released once the tickets have been proven to be delivered. Should a seller not show up, the seats do not match the listing, or the game is cancelled, you are covered by buyer protection.

French clubs sell to their abonnés first, and PSG especially has a membership structure that takes the bulk of the Parc des Princes before any tickets go on sale to the public. Le Classique and any PSG home game against a European opponent are almost never made available to general buyers.

There is also a practical point to consider. French stadia enforce strict segregation policies and some clubs require ID that matches the ticket holder's name for big games, including Le Classique and the Derby du Nord. It is important to purchase via a platform that will correctly transfer names.

French Ligue 1 Ticket Prices

Costs for French Ligue 1 2026/27 tickets vary according to club, opponent, ticket category and how long before the match you buy. In general, though, the league offers excellent value in Europe.

Value is found with the mid-table teams. Toulouse, Angers, Auxerre, Le Havre and Lorient all offer tickets at prices that are lower than the European average, and Wednesday night fixtures at those venues cost even less. Monaco, the lowest-attended club in the league, consistently offers some of the most affordable tickets in European top-flight football.

PSG are at the other end of the spectrum. The Parc des Princes holds 48,000 and is sold out every week, while the club's membership structure means very few tickets are ever released for general sale, driving resale prices far beyond what would be expected based on the stadium's size alone.

Le Classique on 7 February and the Derby du Nord between Lens and Lille are two games that operate in a different space entirely, and should always be considered as special tickets rather than routine league fixtures.

When to Buy French Ligue 1 Tickets

The schedule is released in the summer, but the specific dates and kickoff times are only finalised a few weeks before each round, as the broadcasters pick their games. Ligue 1 fixtures are split between Friday nights, Saturdays and Sunday afternoons and evenings.

For Le Classique, the Derby du Nord or any PSG home game, purchase as soon as tickets become available. Those never get cheaper. For everything else, buy between three and six weeks in advance, when members of the public can secure tickets from season ticket holders who cannot make the game.

Wednesday night and Friday night fixtures are always the cheapest of the week, and clubs themselves say that Wednesday games offer cheaper prices and greater availability than Saturday ones.

A note on timing: because there is no UK broadcaster for Ligue 1 in 2026/27, more fans from the UK are likely to visit France to watch matches this season. Those travelling to a particular fixture from the UK will want to book even earlier than in recent years.
