Argentine Primera División Tournament Info

Formally called the Liga Profesional de Fútbol but branded as the Torneo Mercado Libre for this season, the Argentine Primera División was established on April 12, 1891 and remains the longest-running top-level soccer competition globally, excluding Britain. It features 30 teams, the largest number of any first-division league in the world.

The tournament uses a unique format that differs from those used in European leagues. The 30 teams are divided into two groups of 15. In each group, teams play against every other team in that group once, while also playing two matches against teams in the other group — one selected at random, and another against a designated local rival. This means each tournament consists of 16 matches per team. The season includes two separate tournaments: the Apertura (January to May) and the Clausura (July to December).

The eight highest-placed teams from each group advance to the knockout phase. Matches are played in a single-leg format, with the team that finished higher in the group stage hosting the game. The competition progresses through quarter-finals, semi-finals and culminates in a final played at a neutral location. This process produces two tournament champions, while a third title, the Campeón de Liga, is awarded to the club with the most aggregate points across both group stages combined.

Argentine Primera División History

The league started in 1891 as a competition for amateur teams formed by British residents in Argentina and transitioned to a professional format in 1931. River Plate leads the all-time standings with 38 titles, followed by Boca Juniors, Racing, Independiente and San Lorenzo — the five teams that together form the "cinco grandes."

When accounting for domestic and international trophies, Boca Juniors have 74 titles to River Plate's 72. Independiente also holds the Copa Libertadores record with seven championships.

But perhaps the greatest contribution of the Primera División is its ability to develop world-class talent. Diego Maradona emerged from the ranks at Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors, Lionel Messi got his start at Newell's Old Boys before joining Barcelona, and Alfredo Di Stéfano was a product of River Plate. Teams across Europe continue to scout Argentina regularly for new talent during each transfer period. Arsenio Erico still holds the record for most career goals with 295, achieved between 1934 and 1947.

Argentine Primera División Format

30 clubs, split into two groups of 15. Each team plays 16 matches per tournament. Two tournaments take place each year.

Teams are relegated based on a three-season rolling average, not just a single campaign. The two teams with the lowest points-per-game average over three years are relegated to the Primera Nacional, and are replaced by the Primera Nacional champion and playoff winner.

Argentina receives six berths in the Copa Libertadores. The Apertura and Clausura champions enter directly, the Copa Argentina winner takes one place and the rest are awarded to the best-placed teams in the annual table that have not already qualified. Other spots are awarded to the Copa Sudamericana.

Last Season's Argentine Primera División Champions

Three winners in the 2025 season should tell you everything you need to know about the league format. Platense won the Apertura for the first time in their history, Estudiantes de La Plata won the Clausura for a seventh time, and Rosario Central won the annual table for a fifth Campeón de Liga title.

Relegated were Godoy Cruz and San Martín de San Juan, promoted were Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza (back in the top flight after 41 years) and Estudiantes de Río Cuarto (40 years).

The Teams to Watch in the 2026 Argentine Primera División

Belgrano won the 2026 Apertura, claiming the club's first top-flight title. Gabriel Ávalos was the Apertura's top scorer with ten goals.

Boca Juniors had the Apertura's longest unbeaten run (12 games) and remain the most requested ticket in Argentina. River Plate boast the largest stadium in South America (85,018 capacity), and a project to increase its size to 101,000 has been announced. Both are currently rebuilding and are expected to be in contention for the Clausura.

Racing, Independiente, Vélez Sarsfield, Talleres, Lanús and Estudiantes all have realistic chances of competing, and the group format means a run of six or seven matches can see almost any side progress to the knockout stage.

Attend A Live Argentine Primera División Match

There is no other footballing experience quite like it. Supporters don't sit down, they don't stop singing and they don't wait for a goal to raise their voices. The famous La Bombonera shakes under the weight of fans jumping in unison in the terraces, while the Monumental stands at 85,018 capacity (with a 101,000 expansion planned).

At the pinnacle sits the Superclásico, contested between two clubs that between them command almost 70 per cent of the nation's support, and played 266 times since 1913. Elsewhere you will find the Avellaneda derby (Racing v Independiente), the Rosario derby (Central v Newell's) and the clásico in Córdoba (Talleres v Belgrano).

Buenos Aires alone contains approximately half the clubs in the division. In the capital itself you'll find Boca, River, San Lorenzo, Huracán, Vélez, Argentinos, Platense, Barracas and Riestra, with Banfield, Lanús and Tigre in the surrounding suburbs and Independiente and Racing just outside the city limits in Avellaneda. That makes Buenos Aires a paradise for the travelling football fan.

100% Genuine Argentine Primera División Tickets With Buyer Protection

Every ticket is verified before it is listed, and funds are held securely until the tickets are confirmed as having been received. If the seller doesn't provide the tickets, they don't match the description, or a fixture is cancelled, you're covered by buyer protection.

There's only one rule in Argentina that affects how you buy a ticket. Away fans cannot attend Liga Profesional games. Only home supporters and neutral fans are allowed in, a rule that has been in effect since 2013 to ensure crowd safety. If you purchase tickets for a Boca home game, you will be seated among Boca fans.

Another important rule is the socio system. Argentine teams sell tickets to members first, and the major teams often have a membership base several times the size of their stadiums, so there are very few tickets released for public sale. Some teams also require you to have a club membership card in order to enter. In most cases, the only way to purchase tickets is through a verified resale platform, which is far more secure than buying from unofficial vendors outside the stadium.

Finally, a word of caution about timing. Kick-off times and even match dates in Argentina change regularly, and sometimes on short notice. Make sure you confirm before making travel plans.

Argentine Primera División Ticket Prices

Ticket costs vary significantly depending on the home team and whether it's a derby match.

In the lower half of the table, tickets are relatively affordable. Huracán vs Deportivo Riestra starts at approximately €109, Platense vs Gimnasia de Mendoza at €124, and Platense vs San Lorenzo at €130. Lanús vs Platense begins around €172.

At the major clubs in Buenos Aires, prices are higher. Boca Juniors vs Central Córdoba starts at €147, vs Independiente at €169, vs Unión at €185, and vs Lanús at €236-€250. Racing vs Boca starts at €197, while Vélez vs San Lorenzo is about €215.

The Superclásico is a different beast entirely. Boca Juniors vs River Plate at La Bombonera is priced at around €641 with 288 listings, more than quadruple the cost of a standard home fixture and one of the most expensive regular-season tickets in South America.

The availability of tickets is a crucial factor. Home matches at Boca typically have between 190 and 290 listings, while smaller teams may have 10 or fewer listings. Some smaller venues won't have any listings at all.

When to Buy Argentine Primera División Tickets

Purchase tickets well in advance, especially for derbies. The Superclásico, the Avellaneda derby, the Rosario derby, and the Córdoba derby are fixtures where tickets will completely disappear rather than just becoming more expensive.

For non-derby matches at the big clubs, purchasing three to six weeks in advance is ideal. Matches featuring Boca and River are always in high demand and their ticket supply is sufficient, but they do tend to increase in price.

Smaller clubs present a risk. Teams like Deportivo Riestra, Platense, Sarmiento, and newly promoted sides often have fewer than 15 tickets listed per match, and sometimes none. If you are planning to visit one of these stadiums, prioritise that match rather than treating it as a secondary option.

If you're planning a football-focused trip to Buenos Aires, start with the match you want to see most and plan the rest of your schedule accordingly. Fixtures are released in batches and both tournaments run from Friday through to Monday, so it's often feasible to fit three or four matches into a trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much are Argentine Primera División tickets?

Tickets for mid-table matches start from around €109-€172. Boca Juniors home games range from about €147-€250 depending on the opposition. The exception is the Superclásico between Boca and River at La Bombonera, which starts around €641.

Are away supporters allowed at Argentine Primera División matches?

Away supporters are not permitted at Liga Profesional fixtures because of safety concerns. They haven't been allowed in since 2013. Tickets give access to home fans and neutral supporters only, so anyone with a ticket will be situated in the home end.

How does the Argentine Primera División work?

There are 30 teams divided into two groups of 15. Each team plays 16 games in a tournament; 14 within their group and two against the opposing group including their derby opponent. The top eight in each group progress to the knockout phase. There are two tournaments each season, the Apertura and Clausura, and there's a third competition based on points accumulated throughout both seasons.

When is the Superclásico?

Boca Juniors and River Plate play each other at least twice a year, once in the Apertura and again in the Clausura, playing alternating home games at La Bombonera and the Estadio Más Monumental. It's also possible that they could meet in the Copa Argentina.

How many teams in the Argentine Primera División?

There are 30 teams, more than any other major league in the world. Two teams will be relegated each season to the Primera Nacional as the ones with the lowest three-year cumulative totals.

Do I need to be a member of a club to attend?

No. Argentine football clubs prioritise members and for the biggest clubs, membership exceeds the number of seats in the stadium so general ticket sales are limited. Verified ticket listings from resale platforms are the easiest way for non-members to attend.

Which club has won the most Argentine league titles?

River Plate, with 38 championships. Boca Juniors are the winners of the most trophies in total with 74 across all domestic and international competitions, while River have won 72.
