Bundesliga Tournament Info

The Bundesliga is Germany's top football league and also the league which has the biggest crowds in the world. The 18 teams play each other home and away over 34 matchdays. Three points for a win, one for a draw.

There are two things that make it different from any other big-five league. The first is that under the 50+1 rule, the club members must own more than half the club and this means ticket prices must stay affordable. The second thing is that there are still standing areas in the stadiums. This wasn't allowed in England over 30 years ago, but remains an integral part of the match-day experience in Germany. It's possible to buy Bundesliga Tickets for less than €20 and stand on a terrace with 25,000 other people. That's why German football attendances are bigger than any other league in Europe.

Bundesliga History

The Bundesliga was founded in 1963 when the various regional leagues were unified into one national league. Bayern Munich have been the dominant force, more than any other team in any major league. They have won 34 Bundesliga titles, and 35 German Championships in total, including 11 in a row from 2013 to 2023.

Borussia Dortmund have won five Bundesliga titles, Borussia Mönchengladbach five, Werder Bremen four and Hamburger SV three. Schalke 04 won seven German Championships before the existence of the Bundesliga, two either side of the Second World War. Bayer Leverkusen ended Bayern's long domination of the Bundesliga in 2023/24 when they went the entire season undefeated under Xabi Alonso.

Bundesliga Format

18 teams, 34 matchdays, 306 fixtures, August to May. Three points for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss.

Top four qualify for the Champions League league phase and Germany can also gain a fifth place in the Champions League through the UEFA coefficient if the country performs well in Europe. Next comes Europa League and Conference League qualification, with the DFB Pokal winners taking a European spot too. The only thing you really need to know about the German league is the relegation system. The two lowest finishers get sent down automatically, while the club finishing 16th enters a two-game playoff against the third-place team in the second division. This is the tie that sent Wolfsburg down last season.

Bundesliga Winners Last Season

Bayern Munich won the 2025/26 season, their 34th title, and wrapped it up on Matchday 30 with a 4-2 victory against VfB Stuttgart. Borussia Dortmund took second place and the runner-up spot, while RB Leipzig and Stuttgart took the other two Champions League spots.

On the flip side, VfL Wolfsburg lost their relegation tie to Paderborn and fell into the second tier for the first time since 1997. Heidenheim and St. Pauli got the boot.

Best Teams to Watch in the 2026/27 Bundesliga

Bayern Munich will look to defend their crown at the Allianz Arena, a 75,000-seater stadium that sells out every week and whose games are the most-requested in Germany. They'll have to deal with a tough challenge from Dortmund, who have the Südtribüne of the Signal Iduna Park behind them — 25,000 of their fans standing in the largest terrace in European football.

In between them will be the likes of Leverkusen, Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt, while Stuttgart and SC Freiburg can also qualify for European competition.

The three new boys have three different stories. Schalke are coming up as champions of the second tier on 70 points, and their fan base is one of the biggest in Germany. SC Paderborn are up after beating Wolfsburg in the relegation playoff and are back in the Bundesliga for the first time since 2019/20. SV Elversberg are in for the first time in their history, coming from a town of just 13,000 and playing in a ground that holds fewer than 10,000 fans.

The Germans do matchdays better than anybody. And it's the terraces that set them apart. The Südtribüne at Signal Iduna Park holds 25,000 supporters in a single bank behind the goal. That's the biggest terrace in European football, and a sea of yellow that can only be appreciated from the stands. At Union Berlin's Alte Försterei, the terraces are nearly all-standing. Even the modern stadiums retain a Kurve.

And there's the matter of cost. There's beer available in the stadium, food is inexpensive, and getting to the stadium is often part of the price. Attending a Bundesliga away day actually costs a small fraction of what you'd pay in England.

There's a good range of grounds to choose from as well. From the glowing exterior of the Allianz Arena to the solar panels on the facade of the Weserstadion in Bremen to the retractable pitch at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen. Playing in a village in Saarland in front of less than 10,000 fans, Elversberg will offer the strangest away experience in the league.

100% Genuine Bundesliga Tickets with Buyer Protection

All listings are checked before they're posted, and your money isn't taken until the tickets have been confirmed as being received. If a seller doesn't show up, the tickets aren't as advertised, or a game gets cancelled, we'll protect you.

It's hard enough to get tickets from German clubs anyway. Membership rolls at clubs like Bayern, Dortmund and Schalke run into the hundreds of thousands, and members get first call. Season tickets are often passed down from parent to child. General sale for high-profile matches can last just minutes. And most clubs won't allow you to use their platform if your account isn't registered in Germany, so if you're coming from abroad then a vetted resale site is likely to be your best bet.

An important point regarding Germany is that a terrace ticket is simply a standing place without a seat number. So when you purchase a 'Stehplatz' (standing space), you're purchasing entry into an area. And you get where you want to be if you arrive early enough.

Bundesliga 2026/27 Ticket Prices

Ticket prices for the Bundesliga 2026/27 remain one of the best bargains in the big five European leagues. The 50+1 rule has allowed the league's clubs to keep the price of terrace tickets down.

On the cheapest side, Borussia Dortmund's fixture at home to Bayer Leverkusen currently starts from €92 with 160 listings. Clubs in the lower half of the table like Augsburg, Hoffenheim, Mainz and Paderborn are even cheaper, while a Stehplatz at most clubs can start for as low as €25 at face value.

Then there are fixtures that cost between €90 to €200. RB Leipzig vs Borussia Mönchengladbach currently starts from €201 with 82 listings, which is more about the limited availability of tickets for Leipzig than the actual fixture.

Lastly, we have the expensive matches. The most expensive match in German football is the highly anticipated 'Der Klassiker' between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, with the two games being held at the Allianz Arena (Oct 31) and Signal Iduna Park (Mar 6). Then we have the Revierderby (Dortmund vs Schalke) making its return this season after a three-year absence and will be priced accordingly. But all home games of Bayern Munich will be relatively expensive due to the Allianz Arena always being sold out on game days.

When to Buy Bundesliga Tickets

The full 2026/27 schedule is out now, but specific dates and kick-off times will be announced a few months in advance in batches after broadcasters have made their selections. Games are played on Friday nights, Saturday afternoons, Saturday evenings, and Sundays.

For 'Der Klassiker', the Revierderby, and any home game of Bayern Munich, the sooner the better. They don't get cheaper, and German clubs release only a fraction of tickets back into the resale market. For all other games, expect the best deal around four to eight weeks before the match. Due to season ticket holders giving back their tickets via official resale platforms provided by each club, supply is constant throughout the season.

Smaller clubs like Elversberg, who play in front of less than 10,000 fans, or Paderborn, with a capacity of just above 15,000, are exceptions to that rule. It may be more difficult to find a ticket for a fixture of these clubs compared to a mid-table fixture in Munich. Do plan ahead and book earlier if such matches are on your list.

FAQs

How much are Bundesliga tickets?

Tickets are the cheapest among Europe's big five leagues. Terrace tickets can be bought for under €25 at face value at most clubs. Borussia Dortmund's home game against Bayer Leverkusen is currently available from around €92 on the resale market. However, Der Klassiker and most Bayern Munich home fixtures carry a premium.

When does the 2026/27 Bundesliga season begin?

The season begins on Friday 28 August 2026, when Bayern Munich face VfB Stuttgart in Munich. It concludes on Sunday 22 May 2027 and runs over 34 matchdays.

Which teams are playing in the Bundesliga in 2026/27?

There are 15 teams that avoided the drop, plus new arrivals Schalke 04, SV Elversberg and SC Paderborn 07 who replace the relegated VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Heidenheim and FC St. Pauli. Links to all 18 teams are above.

What is a Stehplatz ticket?

A standing place on the terrace. While stadiums in England have abolished all standing areas, German clubs continue to offer terraces for supporters. These stand tickets tend to be the cheapest available and are unreserved – which means you buy entry to a section of the terrace rather than a specific seat number. The earlier you arrive, the better position you'll have.

How does relegation in the Bundesliga work?

The bottom two teams are relegated automatically. The club that finishes in 16th place plays a two-legged play-off against the third-placed team in the 2. Bundesliga. The winner of the play-off retains its spot in the Bundesliga.

Do I need to be a member of a Bundesliga club to buy tickets?

While club membership gives priority, many Bundesliga clubs limit online sales to German-based accounts. You can purchase Bundesliga tickets via verified resale platforms without needing to be a member of a club. These resale listings also come with buyer protection guarantees.

What is Der Klassiker?

Der Klassiker is the name given to the fixture between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. It is widely considered the biggest match in German football.
